Visible & Judgeable vs. The Invisible Reality - A Rotating Hanging Art Piece

Visible & Judgeable vs. The Invisible Reality – is an award-winning rotating hanging art piece by Cynthia Carson, that explores the duality of life with a brain injury.

Size: 51 cm x 70 cm (framed)

Medium: Leather / Acrylic Paint / Mixed Media

Two Perspectives in One Art Piece

It reveals two sides of the same experience:

  1. The Visible & Judgeable Side – the calm, the acceptance, the way society perceives people based on appearances and social norms.

  2. The Invisible Reality – the unseen struggles, internal chaos, and pain that most will never perceive.

The rotation allows viewers to experience these perspectives dynamically, creating a unique and interactive way to understand invisible disabilities through art.

The Personal Story Behind the Art

Creating this piece was a challenge. A static, side-by-side display could never communicate the intensity and complexity of living with a brain injury. A spinning piece might, kind of like a coin has 2 sides, even though it's the same piece.

Spin the artwork, and you glimpse a normal day for me:

  • I look “normal”, “healthy,” and seemingly fine.

  • Inside, my brain feels like it’s trapped in a pressure cooker, constantly under stress.

I can’t count the number of times I’ve been told:

  • “BUT you don’t LOOK sick/disabled!”

  • “BUT you’re TOO YOUNG for that!”

  • “BUT you LOOK great, so OBVIOUSLY you are HEALTHY!”

  • “BUT it’s all just in your head!” (Yes, that’s where the brain is located.)

  • “BUT have you tried YOGA?”

For those with invisible disabilities, these phrases hit hard—but this artwork transforms frustration into understanding.

Raising Awareness About Invisible Disabilities

Many people never experience the challenges of an acquired brain injury (ABI). In Canada, there’s a month dedicated to Brain Injury Awareness, but without personal connection, most have likely never heard of it.

This piece is my attempt to communicate the two sides of our lives:

  • What is visible and judged by society

  • The invisible reality that only those who live it can truly understand

Through this interactive framed art, I invite viewers to pause, reflect, and consider the realities that remain unseen.
